Chinese New Year, Gong Hay Fat Choy

Sunday 5th February from 3.30pm, we’ll be celebrating with a traditional Chinese Lion Dance at TCB St Helens

The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in China. It is celebrated at the turn of the lunar calendar, usually in late January or early February.

The festival typically lasts for 15 days and is a time for families to come together, celebrate, and honor their ancestors.

The celebration of the Chinese New Year starts with the New Year’s Eve, where families gather together for a big feast.

Cleaning and decorating their homes is also an important part of the preparation, as it’s believed that it will sweep away bad luck and make way for good luck in the new year.

Red lanterns, banners with auspicious messages, and couplets (short poems) are also commonly used to decorate homes and streets.

On New Year’s Day, people dress in new clothes, usually red, and give red envelopes filled with money to children as a symbol of good luck.

It’s also a tradition to visit family members, friends, and even colleagues. Lion and dragon dances are performed in the streets to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck.

Fireworks are also set off at midnight, to chase away evil spirits and to mark the beginning of the new year.

There are also other customs during the Chinese New Year, such as eating dumplings, glutinous rice cakes, and fish, all of which are believed to bring prosperity and good luck.

The Chinese New Year is a time for celebration, sharing, and wishing for good health, happiness, and success in the coming year.

The Chinese Zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by a different animal.

The order of the animals in the zodiac is determined by a traditional folk tale in Chinese culture, where the Jade Emperor invited all the animals in the kingdom to a race, the first 12 that arrived at the finish line would be chosen to represent the years.

Rabbit is known to be a symbol of good luck and fortune, associated with gentleness, kindness and compassion. People born under the sign of the rabbit are said to be elegant, sensitive, and kind-hearted. They are also known to be good communicators and have a good sense of humor.

Happy Chinese New Year
